Art, architecture and design: Adriana Somoza's pillars.

IADE: In one of your interviews we read that you were always called Fine Arts. How did you get to know our school, and what encouraged you to study with us?

AS Interior Designer: I have always felt very attracted to the world of art, architecture and design. That's why I always try to introduce painting and sculpture in my designs. As for my training at the school, I knew IADE through a family member who studied fashion, and who always gave me very good references. In addition, the place where it is located suited me very well because I lived quite close.

I: How was your experience at the school?

AS.I: In IADE, I discovered a new exciting world for me, everything interested me and I did not mind dedicating hours of study, the demand was very high and this helped me a lot to develop my profession later. I still apply this level of demand and continuous learning in my day-to-day work.

I: What was your dream (professionally speaking) when you entered the school? Did it change throughout your career?

AS. I: When I entered IADE I was very young and I didn't have a specific goal in mind. My dream was to train in an artistic discipline, and I loved interior design. Later, as I evolved, my life set me higher and higher goals that meant challenges to achieve.

Professional transition

IADE: What did you do at the end of your studies at IADE?

AS Interiorista: During my last course in Interior Design, I worked as an intern in Javier Muñoz's studio, where I had the opportunity to collaborate in the edition of Casa Decor. After finishing IADE, I was in the Alfaro Arquitectura studio, where I was able to develop the technical part of my profession, and later, I joined INDIETRO where I learned a lot about dealing with clients and suppliers. After almost 10 years, I felt that the time had come to form my own studio, and it was in 2016 when we debuted at Casa Decor with our own space HEAVEN.

AS Interiorista Universe

IADE: You currently have your own studio, AS Interiorista, how was this idea born?

AS Interiorista: The idea of forming my own studio was a necessary evolution for me. After my academic training at IADE, and working and learning alongside great professionals, I needed to finally develop my own creativity.

I: Within everything you do in your work as an interior designer, what do you like to do the most? Or perhaps, what part of the creative process is the part that excites you the most?

AS. I: Without a doubt, starting with a blank canvas to create an environment that transports us to a place or an era. The design of a space that tells a story. When you carry out the work and see how those designs become reality is when you see your dreams come true.

I: What was it like for you to see your creations at Casa Decor?

AS. I: As I already participated in Casa Decor in a collaborative way while I was studying, having my own space was a goal that once realized turned out much better than I imagined.

We have been participating since 2016, which was the first year of the 5 consecutive years we have been there, and it was very well received by the press and the public. Each year is a new challenge that requires a lot of effort and dedication and that, in turn, gives a lot of satisfaction.

Adriana's references

IADE: Every creator is nourished by some reference. Who would you say are your aesthetic references, or where do you usually find inspiration?

AS Interiorista: As aesthetic references I can name Jesus Alfaro, for his architecture of pure lines and open and luminous spaces; the unique nuances of David Hicks whose geometries I love; the sober but daring style of Andree Putman; the designs of Marco Zanuso and Maison Jansen....

Inspiration is always around you; travel, nature, architecture, art... They are all references that influence the different projects you carry out.

Perspectives on interior design

IADE: How do you think the interior design sector has evolved? Would you say that now there is more competition, or on the contrary, more synergies are being created between designers?

AS Interiorista: Our experience with other designers is more synergy than competitiveness, since we each have a very distinct and differentiated style and we try to develop it as much as possible, admiring the work of our colleagues, and sharing experiences and new technologies that we can each apply to our own style.

I: We are very interested in knowing your opinion. Do you think that, as a result of the current situation, interiors are going to start to be thought of in a different way?

AS. I: I think the current situation is going to mark a new stage for everyone, we are living our homes more than ever and we will need them to be as comfortable as possible, while in restaurants and hotels it will be the decoration that makes the difference.

I: How do you see the interior design sector today, and what do you think is getting the most attention?

AS. I: I think the focus is on sustainability, comfort, and the application of new technologies that facilitate our daily lives and reduce energy consumption.

Lastly, it is important to highlight the careful visual presentation that public spaces must make to project their aesthetic proposals in social networks, in order to achieve greater success.
