Rubén Galarreta, IADE alumni, meets with 3rd year Fashion Design students to talk about his experience as a designer in New Delhi.

October 6 2015

His life took a complete turn at the end of 2013 when Ruben Galarreta, a month after graduating from IADE School of Design, received a message from Manish Arora, the most important Indian haute couture designer, with the proposal that he go to work with him.

I had met him through his instagram account!

- "A week later I was working in his studio in New Delhi. I had to move up my final exams and miss graduation, but my professors were very supportive."-.

The experience was what Ruben considers a total odyssey.

-I was only going for three months but Manish offered me from the very beginning to stay and work with him. Two weeks after arriving, he told me 'I have an order for a dress for Lady Gaga. We have 5 days. How about you do it?". I got to work, there was no time to lose. From the pattern of some sleeves that I had made during the last course with Marucha (pattern making teacher at IADE) for a friend's wedding dress, I developed a new and very modern design in neoprene fabric. In a week the dress was done and the reward was huge: seeing Lady Gaga in London wearing our creation".

Today Ruben has become Manish Arora's main assistant in India. He is in charge of a workshop with five employees plus six trainees, whom he supervises in all aspects of design. "It's a big responsibility because I have to make decisions on his behalf and make everything work."

On the other hand, he doesn't want to stop developing his own work as a designer and takes time from wherever he can. At the moment he is immersed in the development of his fourth collection and intends to finish it in the few days of his vacation in his native Logroño. "In the process of creating my designs I go slowly because I do everything myself, but I know very well what I want and I decide the result I want to achieve.

When it comes to creating a new collection, Rubén leaves us a very interesting clue: "Take two inspirational motifs that are as different as possible from each other and one of them you don't like at all. From the research and work of these two sources of inspiration will come out the best. This is how the greatest work...for example Miuccia Prada".

Thank you very much for your visit and looking forward to see soon the next collection "made by Ruben Galarreta".
