Interior design: María Moro's studio

October 9 2020

More and more Interior Design alumni are telling us about their trajectories and their creative present. This is the case of María Moro, who since 1990 has not stopped growing professionally.

At 52 years old, we reconnect with María Moro, alumni of our interior design program and member of our #comunidadiade, to learn about her professional journey over the past 30 years.

The adventure of interior design

IADE: How did you get to know IADE, and what made you decide to study with us?

María Moro: I found out about IADE through a COU classmate; I was a bit lost as to where to focus my studies. Architecture was very appealing to me, but I had always been more of a liberal arts student, and on the other hand, I also liked art history.
When my roommate told me about IADE and the program in interior design, the light went on. My parents thought it was a good idea and we went for it.

I: How was your experience at IADE?

M.M: My experience at IADE was fantastic. I loved the studies, I loved the school and I loved the neighborhood I was in. It was a great time.

I: What was your dream (professionally speaking) when you entered IADE? Did it change throughout your career?

M.M: I don't think I knew at all where I wanted to go when I started my studies at IADE. For me it represented the possibility of working in something related to architecture, art and aesthetics.

Throughout my studies I learned a lot. I discovered what design is and what it really means, my interest in furniture was awakened... but above all, I found myself in front of a world of possibilities.

Getting into the Studio

IADE: What is a day like in your interior design studio?

María Moro: 20 years ago I moved to a small house that I renovated in Aravaca and a few years later I moved my studio here.

I like to wake up with time to get organized before I start working. Some days, I start with studio work, while others I go on site visits, or to see potential clients or suppliers.

I: What is your favorite thing to do within the whole creative process you go through with each project?

M.M: My favorite part of the job is the development of the project and the follow-up of the work.

I: Going into more detail... What does your work consist of?

M.M: I do renovations and interior design, especially for homes, although I have also done commercial premises and offices.

The reforms can be integral rehabilitations or simpler decorative projects.

Depending on what it is, I always start by meeting with the clients in the space to intervene, and I put special interest in meeting their needs and aspirations according to how they live and how they want to live.
Afterwards, I make a project proposal and with it, a detailed budget of the project. If this is accepted, I proceed with the execution of the work.

Both the coordination of teams and suppliers and the supervision of the work to be carried out throughout the whole project are part of my work and require continuous visits and reviews with clients and workers.

I: Do you have a support team to carry out your projects?

M.M: I am an independent professional who works with trusted professionals and suppliers. I find it very enriching to work with qualified people from other sectors.

Expansion and dissemination channels

IADE: What media do you use to make your interior design studio known?

María Moro: My work has always been intertwined with my life, so the projects I have developed have been mostly for friends, family...and people who come through them.

It's funny, many people recommend not to work for acquaintances and yet the opposite happens to me.

Currently, I have a website that I use as a cover letter for my projects. I am also on LinkedIn, although I must confess that I am not a big fan of social networks, but I know that it is important and necessary to have a presence on them to make yourself known.

I: Would you like to come to the School in the future to share your experience with our undergraduate and master's degree students in interiors?

M.M: Of course, I would be delighted.
